Why
the Universities of Bangkok?
If to impact Bangkok is to impact
the ‘10-40 window’, then what is a strategic point that if truly impacted, would
impact Bangkok with the gospel of Jesus Christ? 1 of every 6 people in Thailand
live in Bangkok, and one of every 10 people in Bangkok is a university student!
There are 10,000,000 plus people in Bangkok now, so that means that there are
1,000,000 university students in Bangkok, on over 30 campuses in the city. Since
Bangkok is the only city of its size in Thailand, and so when most of the students
graduate from the university, they tend to stay in Bangkok and work. This means
we can plant churches and train church planters from university students. This
is good because the university students are one of the most receptive parts of
the population and they are old enough that they can culturally begin to make
their own decisions as it relates to knowing Christ. To impact the university
students and their campuses will send laborers for the kingdom of God who are
the leaders in the mainstream of Bangkok life, and it will prepare an army of
laborers who can carry the gospel and plant churches that will send forth their
own laborers into the ‘10-40 window’. Think of it! Bangkok has the freedom
for westerners to communicate the gospel broadly, Bangkok has the arteries that
connect with the mainstream cities of the 10-40 window, and the universities of
Bangkok have the students who can be reached to become an army of laborers to
traverse those arteries that fill Bangkok, and then go out into Indo-China and
the 10-40 window! I know of no other world class city on the earth that affords
an opportunity with this mix. |
