Impacting the 10-40 widow through the Universities of Bangkok

There are over 30 universities in Bangkok with almost 1 million students - the largest
university has over 300,000 students. Many others have around 10 to 20
thousand students each.

If this generation of university students could be impacted with the
Gospel, then they could be an army of laborers/church planters for Bangkok and
the 10/40 window.

Bangkok is a city of 10 million people, and is projected to grow to
20 million within the next 25-30 years. There are around 60 million people
in all of Thailand. This means that 1 in every 6 Thais live in Bangkok! 95%
of Thai people are Buhddist, 4% are Muslim and less that ? of 1% are
evangelical Christian.

As stated above, 1 in 6 of all the Thai people in Thailand live in Bangkok, but
1 in 10 Bangkokians are university students! Our goal is to plant churches
through the students of the universities in Bangkok. This is possible because
apart from Bangkok there is no other city in Thailand of such size. This means
that most students remain in Bangkok upon graduation for work. Thus we
can plant churches in Bangkok from the students.

In terms of the Buddhist religion here, it is more of a veneer to
animism. Placating spirits is a very common part of every day life here.
Thai Buddhists believe that if you do good, that you will receive good in return,
and the same for evil. They believe that life is made up of 1000’s of
rebirths do to our bad karma from the past. Their goal is to reach Nirvana - a
state of no attachment to anything, a state of nothingness where one does not
need to be reborn. But most common people believe it is very hard to ever escape
one’s bad karma and the need to be reborn. The goal in life is to rid one self of suffering through not being attached to people, goals, etc.

All that I have said about their beliefs are in the formal sense. Practically, they are motivated more by materialism and success, and in getting the help of the spirits to reach these goals - i.e. - passing exams, winning the lottery, having good
luck, getting ahead in life, etc.
